by Tomas Kapusta

On July 23, 2023, the San Diego Sabers stepped onto the ice at Foxboro Sports Center Rink 1 for their highly anticipated first playoff game in the Chowder Cup. The stage was set for an intense and gripping battle as they faced off against the formidable Navan Grads Hockey Red.

The opening period of the game was an intense battle right from the start. The San Diego Sabers struck first with an impressive goal from #6 Mario Paganini, who found the back of the net at 6:08 into the first period, setting the tone for an action-packed game. However, Navan Grads Hockey Red quickly retaliated, showing their determination. At the 4-minute and 12-second mark, #21 Tommy Woods and #23 Grant Parshall combined to score a goal, leveling the score.

But Navan Grads Hockey Red didn't stop there; they seized a power play opportunity at 4 minutes and 56 seconds, and #4 Nathan Hargest, with excellent assists from #11 Jack Lowry and #19 Noah Carpenter, capitalized on the advantage, propelling the home team into the lead.

The first period remained heated, with both teams displaying impressive offensive and defensive efforts. However, the San Diego Sabers faced some penalty trouble during this period. #15 Nate Compton, #9 Peter Avalos, #15 Gonzalo Almanza, and #6 Mario Paganini all served two-minute penalties for various offenses. Meanwhile, Navan Grads Hockey Red also had a penalty, with #8 Edward Barbieri spending two minutes in the penalty box for slashing.

Remarkably, with just 1 second remaining in the first period, lightning struck twice for #6 Mario Paganini, who managed to find the back of the net once again and tied the game. This late goal added even more excitement to the already intense matchup.

As the second period commenced, both teams intensified their efforts, but the goaltenders, #33 Jack Signorelli for the San Diego Sabers and #30 Jaeden Nelson for Navan Grads Hockey Red, remained solid in net, preventing any goals from being scored in the second period.

With no additional goals in regulation time, the game headed to overtime, where both teams continued to battle fiercely but couldn't find the back of the net. The overtime period ended with no winner, resulting in a shootout.

In the shootout, Navan Grads Hockey Red shooters came out strong, with Owen House and Dominic Bzdyl successfully finding the net. San Diego Sabers' Mario Paganini managed to score in the shootout, but it wasn't enough to secure the victory.

In the end, Navan Grads Hockey Red emerged victorious, with a final score of 3-2. The game showcased outstanding performances from both teams, but it was Navan Grads Hockey Red who capitalized on their chances and came out on top.

Overall, the game was a testament to the competitiveness and excitement of hockey, with both teams leaving it all on the ice in pursuit of victory.
