Sabers Look To Get Right At Home

by Sebastian Abdon Ibarra

The 2023-24 home opener for your San Diego Sabers is nearly upon us. The Sabers make a quick pitstop in Lakewood on Friday for one game against the Long Beach Shredders and then will welcome those same Shredders for a two-game set at Icetown Carlsbad the following day. Both teams come into Friday’s game seeking their first win of the season.

Despite a one-game interruption before making it back to Icetown, playing in front of the home crowd on their home ice gives the Sabers an opportunity to quickly flush and move on from the results of last weekend’s series in Las Vegas.

The Sabers are facing a Shredders team that is struggling to score and defend at the start of the season. The Shredders have been shut out in two out of their first three games, and have three goals on the year. Their defense and goalies have also given up a whopping 24 goals in just three games.

Despite how the numbers look for the Shredders, they should not be taken lightly by the Sabers. Long Beach has been active and outshot their opponents in two out of three games. However, with only three goals scored it is still an opportunity for San Diego’s defensemen and goalies to build their confidence back up if they play smart and physical.

The Sabers have had slow starts in two of their first three games to start the season. In one game they did not find the net until the second period, and in the other, they remained scoreless until the third period. In their second game, they started out lightning fast, building a 2-0 lead less than five minutes into the first period. However, they were shut out the rest of the game. Finding a good middle ground between the two extremes and keeping a good tempo on the ice for a full 60 minutes will be key to racking up a couple of wins this weekend.

A couple of Sabers to watch out for this weekend are center Felix Gouin and goalie Loïc St-Denis-Lacombe. Gouin has picked up right where he left off last season as he has recorded an assist in each of the Sabers’ first three games. It is only a matter of time before he finds the back of the net himself. St-Denis-Lacombe is coming off a valiant performance in his last outing. He recorded a 0.933 save percentage on 60 shots attempted in a single game.
